Granddaddy + Nana | Dancing in the Studio || Iowa City Wedding Photographer

As a kid, I used to fly out to visit my grandparents in Colorado every summer.  Of course back then I took it for granted – I wasn’t a huge fan of having to learn how to iron clothes, set the dinner table correctly, or get my hair curled and wear nice outfits for church every Sunday to mingle with the elder folks.  (These were all things my Nana insisted I learn how to do.)  But as I grew older, (notice how I didn’t say grow ‘up’ – that will never happen) I realized how helpful these things were.  When I joined the military I already knew how to iron my uniform.  Now that I’m a wedding photographer I’m thankful I know how reception table settings are set appropriately.   But I’m still trying to get the hang of curling my hair – it only happens about once a year. The biggest things I took away from visiting my grandparents was that I didn’t have to fear traveling by myself, meeting new people (even if they’re older) is fun, and DANG if my Granddaddy didn’t work hard.  He left at the crack of dawn for work and came home to dinner on the table. (We’re still working on that, aren’t we, honey?)

Once of the most vivid memories I’ve had with my Granddaddy is when he came to my BMT graduation from the Air Force in Texas.  I remember walking with my flight to meet our family members and when he saw me and we locked eyes, he cried.  It’s the first time I ever saw him cry and it was because he was truly proud of me.  My Granddaddy retired from the Army years ago.  He joined the military when it was just the Army Air Corps before it broke into two separate entities – the Army and Air Force.  Coincidentally, he was in Okinawa, Japan at the start of WWII.  He was just 25 years old – the same age as I was when I lived in Okinawa as part of the Air Force.  It’s funny how life paths took us to the same overseas location.

For the most part my grandparents have lived in other states.  Until late last year they moved to Iowa from Alabama.  Both in their 90’s, I had them come visit my house and tour my studio.  I’ll never forget the look on Granddaddy’s face when he saw my studio – I asked what he thought and he said, “This is great!  I’m proud of you.” in his charming southern accent.

Although I was nervous to ask them to take their photos, I did anyway.  Years ago my grandparents were told that they looked better when they didn’t show their teeth when they smile… but I told them otherwise.  I turned on Pandora’s 1920’s Car Chase Radio and the first song that came on was the Andrews Sisters’ Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.  Their faces lit up and I asked them to dance.  With a little hop in their step, they did.

Shortly after this day, my Nana had a stroke and was in a rehabilitation center for quite a while.  I was so sad that my Granddaddy and her were separated for so long – and I didn’t want to post these in fear something terrible was going to happen or she didn’t get better.  But all is good!  She’s back with my Granddaddy and I’m so excited to share these with you.

I’ll never regret asking to take these pictures.

  • Better than that! | Second Shooting || Iowa City Wedding Photographer

Better than that! | Second Shooting || Iowa City Wedding Photographer

What I’m about to say probably won’t be easy for some of you to hear, and could make some of you scream, “HALLELUJAH!!”
I second shot a wedding last weekend.  For most photographers, this is no big deal, but for others it will come as a shock – and I’m not really sure why.

Let me take you back to a week before the wedding:  I got an email from a photographer based out of Chicago who was looking for a second shooter and she said, “I know it’s a long shot, but are you available?  I found your work on Instagram and it’s amazing!”  (Side note: she searched #iowacityweddingphotographer.)  Yes, I was available! I had the entire day open and I told her I’d be happy to help (and completely thrilled she asked me!!).  I still get so excited when I’m asked by ANYONE to photograph ANYTHING, because photography is my passion and to be able to do this full time is a dream!

By the end of the night I was told by another vendor that they “thought I was always just a main shooter” and that I would never stoop to the level of second shooting a wedding.  It was shocking to me that someone wouldn’t take the opportunity to learn from another photographer (no matter their level) and help someone who needed it, and help the wedding couple by capturing gorgeous images of their day.  Do I benefit from it?  Will I have a gorgeous full wedding to show my prospective clients after second shooting instead of being the hired photographer? Gorgeous wedding, yes – hired photographer, nope.  But for 6 hours of working with someone, you can learn so much that could help your business.  Also, why would I ever expect someone to second shoot for me if I wasn’t willing to do the job myself??

It makes me so sad that this industry has gotten to a place where I don’t even want to hire a second shooter unless I’m training them and providing them with gear.  I have second shot weddings where photographers said I can only post images on my blog and credit them.  I’ve known people who were asked to second shoot but had to sign an agreement where their images were owned by the hired photographer.  I’ve had second shooters become “besties” with all the vendors, standing around and having lengthy conversations with them during the time I was paying them to shoot.  I’ve had second shooters feel they need to “one-up” the wedding day with tales of their weddings and who they know.  I’ve also had a second shooter get pissed at me for expecting them to do the work I hired them to do (how dare I ask what’s next on the timeline!), so they sat outside for 3 hours and didn’t work.  Even the woman I second shot for in this case said she hoped I’d show up to second shoot because, “you just never know if someone will show up even if they said they would”.  How sad is that??

This industry is HARD ENOUGH with attitudes, egos, and better-than business owners.  The next time you brag about how busy you are, or how many ____ you booked, or you decide to judge people for their Instagram or Facebook following (are you kidding me?), try instead to focus on your own damn business and how to make it better.  Don’t sit around like a holier than thou person giving your “opinion” over your Instagram stories about other businesses.  Who cares what other people are doing or how they are making their money – worry about paying your own bills instead of judging and gloating that you did this and that.  Lift this industry up instead of tearing it down. Lift people up. Lift businesses UP.  Stop acting like you’re “better than that“! – because you aren’t.

I watched someone on their Instagram story say that they think it’s sad when business owners “buy” Instagram followers.  Of course this person was “super sweet” about it, and of course they added that everyone is entitled to do what they want with their businesses.  But in looking back, it was mean, negative, and judgmental – and I thought – why even say that??  I unfollowed them immediately.

My unsolicited advice to anyone who is jealous of someone, compares themselves to other businesses, or is sick and tired of their negativity or judgement (or just being plain MEAN) – unfollow & ignore them.  It will make you so much happier and will allow you to focus on what’s important.

I hope this post has helped some of you.  Others, I hope it’s opened your eyes to what’s necessary and completely unnecessary when it comes to how you treat people on social media.

Thank you to Lauren Sims Photography for trusting me to be a part of this stunning wedding.  And thank you for saying I could post images without crediting you.  Because of that, I want to thank you for not being one of “those” hired photographers.  Weddings are about the COUPLE.  They aren’t about us photographers. It was a blast and I’m so glad I was available to help!!

It was a perfect day for a wedding!!!

Haley D. || Iowa City Studio Session | High School Senior Photographer

My daughter and I have always had a blast taking photos together since the day I picked up a camera – even when we lived overseas and I had a point-and-shoot (the photos may not have been professional, but I will cherish them forever).  She’s growing up way too fast and she amazes me every single day.  From being a high school freshman in AP classes, going out for a sport every trimester, making show choir and singing solos on Hancher Auditorium’s stage, and getting really great grades, to being a super sweet person and surrounding herself with awesome kids.  I thank my lucky stars she is just the way she is.  I’m sad to think she’ll be a senior before I know it.

She wanted to steal a few of my new dresses, put on some pretty makeup (she is an awesome self-taught makeup artist) and play in the studio!  I’m so glad we did; I’ll definitely be printing a few of these!

    xoxo,
    Steph

Ashleigh Mack || Professional Studio Headshots | Iowa City Wedding Photographer

Ashleigh Mack.  If you’ve had the pleasure of being in her company in the last year, you know how strong and resilient she is.  You also know how much love she has for her family.

When her son was diagnosed with a rare form of Leukemia last year at 4 months old, I remember how terrified both her and her husband were.  They gave everything in their fight for their son.  Lincoln Mack passed away 4 months later at only 8 months old.  If you have a minute, visit my blog post about this amazing child and his fight HERE.

I couldn’t be more proud of Ashleigh for campaigning for LLS’ Woman of the Year in Iowa City.  This is a wonderful way to preserve Lincoln’s memory and help fight for cures for cancers like the one that took his life.

She absolutely deserved getting her hair done (by Lavish) and her makeup (by Cult Beauty by Liv) and a headshot session done in the studio to help kick off her 10 week campaign!

  • Mini Honeymoon pt. 2 – San Francisco! | Iowa City Wedding Photographer

Mini Honeymoon pt. 2 – San Francisco! | Iowa City Wedding Photographer

I was tempted to title this with “San Diego Wedding Photographer” since we were in CA for that reason and then decided to make it into a mini-honeymoon, but oh well.  You get the point.
Part 2 of our mini-honeymoon (see part 1 HERE) was spent in San Francisco, a city Chris and I had never been before.  We stayed in Japantown (my fav!) and we were able to quickly explore many parts of the city thanks to Uber!  We ate and drank our way through the city – after all, the wedding was over so we didn’t have to worry about calories. 😉
You may not know this, but I lived in Japan for 4 years so staying in Japantown was like being home.  I ate lots of Japanese treats and spent money on lots of Japanese stuff to take home to Haley, who essentially grew up there.  The coffee was amazing, the cocktails were amazing, the pizza was amazing… and waking up on the last day there to enjoy the Golden Gate Bridge together before anyone else got there was perfect.

    Enjoy!

    xoxo,

    Steph

  • Wedding Day Prep! | Iowa City Wedding Photographer

Wedding Day Prep! | Iowa City Wedding Photographer

When planning my own wedding, I was extremely picky when it came to the look of my photos (DUH).  I wanted every photo and location to look like “us” and as a wedding photographer myself, I needed a spot for our 18 person wedding party (and personal attendant, mom’s, dad’s, etc.) to get ready where we:

    • 1. Didn’t feel cramped and claustrophobic.
    • 2. Where the style of the venue matched my style.
    • 3. (And the most important!) Where the natural light was amazing.

My style isn’t reflected in hotel rooms or church basements, so the choice for me was easy; Little Lights Events in West Branch.  It was easily accessible for the entire wedding party and was a short drive to our ceremony and reception location.  I’ll be honest, the space is so beautiful that I wouldn’t have cared about the driving distance.

Little Lights is STUNNING.  The owner and manager, Erin and Amanda, are seriously two of the nicest women I’ve met. When we showed up, they had the cutest handwritten chalkboard signs congratulating us on our wedding day.  They even had the prettiest set up for us with a pastry tray and sparkly drinks!   I highly recommend searching for unique location options for your wedding day prep and definitely consider Little Lights!!  (Your wedding photographer will thank you!)

These are just a few shots I took with my own camera before my wedding photographer showed up.    We had so much fun – my bridesmaids, personal attendant, and entire wedding team (friends!) ARE THE BEST!!!

  • A peek into my honeymoon | Iowa City Wedding Photographer

A peek into my honeymoon | Iowa City Wedding Photographer

Being able to shoot Andrea + Matt’s wedding at the Andaz Hyatt in San Diego was probably one of the highlights of my career.  It was the 5th anniversary of the first wedding I worked and I even wore fake eyelashes to celebrate the occasion!  But turning it into a mini- honeymoon with my hubby, who hasn’t been able to take a vacation in over a year, was even better.  I even talked him into assisting me at the wedding (the first time ever!) and it was one of the best times.  I missed my partner Julie a TON, but having a man assist me and get along with the guys on a different level was the best!  I even snapped a photo of how dapper he looked that day.  I married up!
After we shot the wedding, we met up with one of my best friends, Diana, and her honey Ryan.  They surprised us with a two night hotel stay right by the beach in Carlsbad.  I seriously have the BEST FRIENDS EVER.  She even snapped a few photos of us on the beach!
We roamed around Encinitas and Carlsbad for a few days (I rarely had my camera on me – this was VACATION.) and we fell in love with that area – I love any culture where not doing your hair and makeup, and wearing ripped jeans is totally acceptable.  Then we headed up to Venice for a night and stayed in the most ADORABLE AirBnB near the beach.  After that we headed up the coast through Big Sur (HOLY AMAZEBALLS) where I’m surprised Chris didn’t kill me… I’m not good with heights and with curvy roads… and stopped in Monterey – where we had the most epic meal at Montrio Bistro.  We ended the trip in San Francisco – I’ll save the San Francisco photos for a later post.  As much as I put my camera down, I still have a lot of photos to share! Comment if you’ve ever been to any of these places!  Chris is plotting his move to Encinitas! haha

    xoxo,

    Steph
