We can all agree that there are not enough ways to help women to realize their true bad-assery around here – and that’s where Cat Cantrill comes in. Cat is one of my favorite women on the PLANET.  She’s an author, entrepreneur, dancer, choreographer and owner and founder of Vitality Fitness and Dance.  She’s all about women empowerment and is doing whatever she can to help women on their “journey to rediscovery” – to regain their confidence, however they may have lost it along the way. And ladies – it is all about YOU. NO. ONE. ELSE. If you are looking to reignite the fire within yourself, look no further! Just one 20 minute conversation with Cat can make you feel so much better about yourself!

When you first hear “dance and fitness” you may think you’re just signing up for another fad fitness class – but Cat and Vitality are SO much more than that. While it all started with Vitality, that is now only just one part of what Cat does – it’s grown to where Cat is now a brand herself. She has the dance, fitness and burlesque classes and workshops, but she realized that stuff isn’t necessarily for everyone, so she added women’s only retreats, FREE mini dance lessons (plus mimosas!), private coaching and makeovers, and troupe performances for those who are ready to show off their confidence again. She really is a woman trying to conquer it all!

Cat says “one of the reasons I offer the fitness classes – and it’s not just a burlesque studio – is because there’s a need for women to feel accepted and loved for their current body… women come in, they know they can just let go, they know that it’s a no-judgement zone, they know it’s women only… and we don’t tolerate any mean girls, and what I mean by that is, don’t come in and complain about your body… don’t be mean to your fellow sister. No one knows what it feels like to be a woman than another woman.” Also, regarding her burlesque classes, she says, “at Vitality, all the choreography and everything that is done in that studio is designed to help her feel amazing. Not about the audience member… we don’t dance for anybody else, we dance for ourselves.”

After growing her business for the past six years, Cat thought it was finally time to get some professional headshots, and unlike some other studio headshots, she wanted them done in her own studio so she could show herself in her own environment. This is a little bit about what she had to say regarding her experience: “I knew with [Stephanie] that I could wear what I wanted to wear, to be able to show my personality, and not have a cheesy corporate [look]… those days are over, I don’t have to hide my personality anymore, I don’t have to keep it under wraps anymore… now I’m able to really express myself, and I knew that I could do that with Stephanie and she would be able to beautifully execute my personality in those pictures.”

Emily is the owner of Soirée, a premier wedding and event planning service here in Eastern Iowa. AAAAND she’s one of my favorite people.  She’s down-to-Earth, really cares about her clients and the services she offers, is genuinely one of the nicest and most talented women I know.

Emily has been in the party planning arena for nearly ten years, and decided to start her own business in November of 2018. Emily’s passion is helping people, especially with planning weddings or other events and says, “I seriously love what I do and can’t imagine doing anything else!” You can read more about Emily and her achievements on her website listed below!

When I asked what she was looking for with her headshots, Emily said that she wants people to know that she is “professional, approachable, and fun. I want the photos to give all engaged couples confidence in who I am as a planner plus make them want to be around me.”  And I’m thrilled we were able to do just that!!!

Emily had this to say about her Branding Headshots session: “[Stephanie] is seriously the best and made me feel so comfortable while taking my photos. Her enthusiasm and joy for what she does is infectious, and we laughed the entire session. It was so much fun! What was even better is now I have gorgeous headshots that are exactly what I had hoped they would be to use for my business.”

I started my business in 2006 as a Junior in High School, but have pivoted it several times, resulting in the business it is today. I love every moment; from meeting a business owner to planning to revealing their final design and seeing their vision come alive. My passion for working with different fonts, colors, and designs is something I have had from a young age; but honestly, nothing beats the feeling I get when a customer loves what they receive, and seeing their brand that I helped create out in the public.

I felt so good after being styled, having my make-up done, chatting with all the amazing women, and then Stephanie made me feel so beautiful and confident. Stephanie is so much more than a photographer. The photos turned out better than I could have imagined!  I cannot wait to use this on my new website and business card. But what’s most important is this newly found confidence has resulted in three new clients!

    Salted Designs’ services include:

    Brand + Logo Design

    Social Media Management

    Website Design

  • Granddaddy + Nana | Dancing in the Studio || Iowa City Wedding Photographer

Granddaddy + Nana | Dancing in the Studio || Iowa City Wedding Photographer

As a kid, I used to fly out to visit my grandparents in Colorado every summer.  Of course back then I took it for granted – I wasn’t a huge fan of having to learn how to iron clothes, set the dinner table correctly, or get my hair curled and wear nice outfits for church every Sunday to mingle with the elder folks.  (These were all things my Nana insisted I learn how to do.)  But as I grew older, (notice how I didn’t say grow ‘up’ – that will never happen) I realized how helpful these things were.  When I joined the military I already knew how to iron my uniform.  Now that I’m a wedding photographer I’m thankful I know how reception table settings are set appropriately.   But I’m still trying to get the hang of curling my hair – it only happens about once a year. The biggest things I took away from visiting my grandparents was that I didn’t have to fear traveling by myself, meeting new people (even if they’re older) is fun, and DANG if my Granddaddy didn’t work hard.  He left at the crack of dawn for work and came home to dinner on the table. (We’re still working on that, aren’t we, honey?)

Once of the most vivid memories I’ve had with my Granddaddy is when he came to my BMT graduation from the Air Force in Texas.  I remember walking with my flight to meet our family members and when he saw me and we locked eyes, he cried.  It’s the first time I ever saw him cry and it was because he was truly proud of me.  My Granddaddy retired from the Army years ago.  He joined the military when it was just the Army Air Corps before it broke into two separate entities – the Army and Air Force.  Coincidentally, he was in Okinawa, Japan at the start of WWII.  He was just 25 years old – the same age as I was when I lived in Okinawa as part of the Air Force.  It’s funny how life paths took us to the same overseas location.

For the most part my grandparents have lived in other states.  Until late last year they moved to Iowa from Alabama.  Both in their 90’s, I had them come visit my house and tour my studio.  I’ll never forget the look on Granddaddy’s face when he saw my studio – I asked what he thought and he said, “This is great!  I’m proud of you.” in his charming southern accent.

Although I was nervous to ask them to take their photos, I did anyway.  Years ago my grandparents were told that they looked better when they didn’t show their teeth when they smile… but I told them otherwise.  I turned on Pandora’s 1920’s Car Chase Radio and the first song that came on was the Andrews Sisters’ Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.  Their faces lit up and I asked them to dance.  With a little hop in their step, they did.

Shortly after this day, my Nana had a stroke and was in a rehabilitation center for quite a while.  I was so sad that my Granddaddy and her were separated for so long – and I didn’t want to post these in fear something terrible was going to happen or she didn’t get better.  But all is good!  She’s back with my Granddaddy and I’m so excited to share these with you.

I’ll never regret asking to take these pictures.

  • Luz + Carel | Newlyweds in Amsterdam || Iowa City Wedding Photographer

Luz + Carel | Newlyweds in Amsterdam || Iowa City Wedding Photographer

It’s so exciting when you meet people… through other people… through other people.  Carel (pronounced almost like Carl) and Luz are newlyweds and as fate would have it, they’re one of the very few people who met on Tinder and actually liked each other! He’s from the Netherlands, she’s from Miami, and when we took these photos Luz had just moved her life to be with him about 45 minutes outside of Amsterdam.  Now that is love.

Amsterdam was a blast with these two!  We spent a few hours roaming around the city on foot – if you’ve ever been there you know how beautiful and unique everything is.  Finding spots to take these photos was super easy.  Their style is so unique and fun.  It’s easy to pick out the Miami vibe in her attire and the European vibe in his!

Luz + Carel, thanks so much for meeting up and smooching on each other for me! haha

    xoxo,
    Steph

Lindsay McGowan | Studio Lifestyle Headshots || Iowa City Wedding Photographer

I still get super excited *and nervous* every time another professional photographer books a session with me.  Luckily, Lindsay is super sweet and she totally made my job easy (I mean, she’s super gorgeous!!).  Her reason for getting these photos done is one that I wish every parent thinks about – to have beautiful photos of herself for her family and children – plus a few gorgeous headshots for her business!  Studio lifestyle headshots are the perfect gift if you aren’t wanting boudoir photos done, but you want beautiful photos of yourself.  Being a wedding photographer is where my heart is, but these sessions are becoming a huge favorite of mine!

  • Erin + Ben Take 2 || Lifestyle Couple’s Session | Iowa City Wedding Photographer

Erin + Ben Take 2 || Lifestyle Couple’s Session | Iowa City Wedding Photographer

The first time I met Erin + Ben, the vision they had for their engagement sessions were amazing.  They flew me and Liv, with Cult Beauty by Liv, up to their family’s cabin in northern Minnesota in December for a few days where we were spoiled rotten with food, wine, and doing what we love!
What I love about this engagement session is the thoughtfulness Erin + Ben put into it.  Using their cabin, some hidden heirlooms (like “Only a Farm Boy” – Ben is a farmer), and a well thought out wardrobe made the entire session come together so perfectly.  I encourage every bride and groom to stay true to who they are and make their engagement sessions as intimate and unique as this one!  To check out another one of their engagement sessions, head HERE.

Erin + Ben’s session has also been published on the Boudoir Collective!

    xoxo,

If you’ve seen my posts the last few months, one of my best friends, and owner of Cult Beauty by Liv, was expecting.  🙂  (You can see her maternity session HERE.)
I’m SO excited to show of this beautiful baby girl!!  Meet Azara Skye.  I couldn’t think of a more perfect name for her – and just look at how adorable this family is.  Seeing her and her big brother together absolutely makes my heart melt.  I was so happy to have them in the studio for a relaxed little lifestyle session.

  • Haley D. || Iowa City Studio Session | High School Senior Photographer

Haley D. || Iowa City Studio Session | High School Senior Photographer

My daughter and I have always had a blast taking photos together since the day I picked up a camera – even when we lived overseas and I had a point-and-shoot (the photos may not have been professional, but I will cherish them forever).  She’s growing up way too fast and she amazes me every single day.  From being a high school freshman in AP classes, going out for a sport every trimester, making show choir and singing solos on Hancher Auditorium’s stage, and getting really great grades, to being a super sweet person and surrounding herself with awesome kids.  I thank my lucky stars she is just the way she is.  I’m sad to think she’ll be a senior before I know it.

She wanted to steal a few of my new dresses, put on some pretty makeup (she is an awesome self-taught makeup artist) and play in the studio!  I’m so glad we did; I’ll definitely be printing a few of these!

    xoxo,
    Steph
